What are the Best Kind of Hair Extensions for my Hair Type?

Hair extensions are the perfect way to make your mane look thicker and longer, even if it's only for a night. But, with so many extensions available, you may be wondering which ones work better for your hair type. Well, look no further because we're here to tell you!

In general, Clip-in extensions work for all types of hair since they're easy to put on and remove. But, if you have thin hair, the extensions clips may show up, which is less than ideal. So, Tape-In sets are better for fine locks because the tape of every weft of hair is almost invisible.

But what kind of extensions are better for thick, curly hair? And should you get natural or synthetic hair extensions? Keep on reading to find out!

The Best Kind of Hair Extension for Every Hair Type

1. Clip-in Extensions - For (Almost) All Types of Hair

As we mentioned before, Clip-in extensions are excellent for (almost) all kinds of hair.

You can find Clip-in extensions made with natural or synthetic hair. These extensions come with a clip (hence the name) that you press, and it latches into your natural hair.

Clip-ins are also the first type of extension that most women buy because of several reasons:

● Clip-ins are the most affordable kind of hair extensions.

● Since you can install and remove most of them yourself, you don't need a stylist when you get Clip-ins.

● Clip-in extensions are temporary. So, these products are less of a commitment than other types of extensions. You can buy Clip-ins for a special event and never wear them again if you discover they're not your thing.

● Clip-ins are gentle on your natural hair, and you don’t need special products to install them.

But, as you can imagine, Clip-in extensions are not always perfect! Depending on the material and where you buy them, these extensions may not look that natural. Thus, anyone who pays attention could tell you're wearing Clip-ins.

Luckily, nowadays, you can buy hair extensions online that come in the highest quality. So, you can find great natural and synthetic Clip-in hair extensions available worldwide.

Another thing to consider is that getting the hang of attaching a Clip-in takes time. The first time you install a Clip-in, it may not blend with your natural hair as well as you hope.

You could also spend more minutes than you expected adjusting the extension. But, with a bit of practice, you can master the technique and get things done quicker!

But when should you avoid Clip-ins? If your natural hair is too thin, it'll be more challenging for the Clip-in to blend with your locks.

Friendly reminder: Don't forget to remove the Clip-in extensions before going to bed. If you sleep with a Clip-in on your head, you risk suffering hair loss. Likewise, you could ruin the shape and texture of the extension or get headaches.

2. Tape-In Extensions - For Naturally Thin Hair

Tape-in extensions are the way to go if your hair is thin. Why? Because these extensions are about an inch wide, so they're also lighter. Tape-ins won't pull your natural hair as much and are less likely to cause hair loss.

Tape-in hair extensions come with, well, a tape that attaches them to your hair. This tape is almost invisible and goes on both sides of a strip of your natural hair. Many stylists compare Tape-ins and a sandwich because of this method, where your locks are the ham. Yum!

This type of hair extensions come with pros such as:

● Tape-ins are the second-most affordable type of hair extensions in the market.

● With proper care, it is possible to reuse these extensions.

● The whole process of installing Tape-in extensions is, usually, short. You will only have to spend about an hour at the salon.

● Tape-in extensions are flatter and look more natural than Clip-in extensions.

● You can wear Tape-ins only in a few areas of your hair if that’s what you need.

But Tape-in extensions also come with some downfalls. For starters, though you don't have to take Tape-ins off to sleep, you can only expect a six to eight weeks longevity. After that period, you'll either need to re-install the extensions or remove them.

Also, unlike Clip-ins, you need a stylist to install your brand new Tape-in extensions. While you could try to put them on yourself, it'll be hard to know how thin the strips of natural hair have to be. Choosing in which areas of your hair to place the extensions will be another challenge.

Last but not least, to keep the Tape-ins looking good, you'll need to change your haircare routine. Forget about washing your hair often and use dry shampoo instead, and don't go to bed with the extensions wet! You should also not style or brush the Tape-ins when they're wet.

3. Sew-in Extensions - For Thick, Curly Hair

Sew-ins or "weaves" are the original hair extensions, with centuries of history.

Women with thick, curly afro hair get these extensions to be able to style their manes easier. Sew-ins allow women to have hair that they can brush fast and doesn't shorten with humidity.

But the process of installing these extensions can last for hours. A weave requires to braid the natural hair in "cornrows" close to the scalp. Then, a stylist has to sew the extensions into the cornrows, using a needle and thread. You may be at the salon for up to six hours!

But the intricate process of installing Sew-in extensions also has benefits that include:

● Sew-in extensions last for longer. With proper care and maintenance, you can rock these extensions for months. So, although they're more expensive, Sew-ins are a good investment.

● A natural hair weave can look very realistic, and you can style it in any way you like. With the hair sewn into the hairline, you can part it as you please!

● There are no chemicals, tapes, or glue involved in the process of installing Sew-in extensions.

But all good things aside, Sew-in extensions are not for everyone. If you have thin locks, you may end up losing tons of hair if you get this type of extension.

Also, it takes some time adjusting to Sew-ins. At first, you may feel your hair is too heavy and could experience headaches.

That said, if your natural hair drives you crazy whenever you brush it, you may want to get Sew-in extensions. These extensions will leave you with the mane of your dreams!

Pro tip: Get a stylist who has experience with Sew-in extensions and thick, curly, or afro hair to install yours. You need to be familiar with the technique to put these extensions on.

Likewise, visit a stylist every four weeks or so to tighten the braids. Oh, and please see a doctor before wearing any kind of hair extensions if you have alopecia.
